Size and proportions

Classic women's watches measure around 26 to 34 millimetres, while modern models are often 34 to 38 millimetres. Larger cases have become more popular in recent years, but on slim wrists a watch that is too big can quickly look clunky. Pay attention to case height too: slim watches are easier to wear under blouse sleeves and look more elegant.

Straps: Milanese, leather, link and expanding

Milanese straps made of finely woven stainless steel are light, airy and often infinitely adjustable via a magnetic clasp – ideal if you want to adjust the length quickly. Leather straps look warm and classic but shouldn't get wet for long. Link bracelets are robust; when buying, it's worth asking whether links can be removed easily. Expanding or stretch bracelets adapt without a clasp but are better suited to slim wrists.

  • Rose gold and gold: easy to combine with jewellery
  • Mother-of-pearl dials look elegant but reflect more
  • Rhinestones and crystals: check that the stones are neatly set
  • Prefer nickel-free materials if you have sensitive skin

Movement, crystal and water resistance

Most women's watches run on a quartz movement: precise, slim and low-maintenance. The battery usually lasts two to three years; have it changed by a watchmaker so the seals get checked. Automatic women's watches are rarer, because small mechanical movements are more complex, and they are often a little thicker.

3 bar water resistance is enough for everyday use, as long as you don't submerge the watch when washing your hands. If you want to wear it in the shower, choose at least 5 bar and only shower cold to lukewarm without much soap – with a leather strap it still isn't a good idea. Mineral glass is standard; you can recognise sapphire crystal by the word "Saphir" (sapphire), and it stays scratch-free much longer.

Pairing your watch with jewellery

Many people now wear their watch together with bangles or bracelets. Bear in mind that hard metal jewellery can scratch the crystal and case – sapphire crystal is an advantage here. Colour-wise, it looks harmonious when case and jewellery share the same tone, such as rose gold with rose gold. If you switch often, choose a neutral silver or stainless steel model that goes with almost everything.

Gorąca woda i mydło obciążają uszczelki, więc lepiej zegarek zdjąć.
